Abstract
Podgora, one of the largest settlements in the Makarska littoral, has preserved several Censuses of Souls (Status animarum) from the 19th century. Along with the surnames, Christian names, numer of members per family and house, they also carry other data significant for the development of that place. They reveal the family relations, immigrations and emigrations, professions, way of life, and linguistic properties of individual surnames and proper names as an expression of the study and development of the Croatian language.
