Sažetak
A Cyrillic manuscript on natural science topics by an unknown author, entitled Početak od razliki stvari od svakoga malo znani (The origin of various things known little to anybody), is kept in the library of the Franciscan Monastery in Sinj. It ranks among rare preserved manuscripts on astronomy and is thus highly valuable for the study of the scientific achievements and interests of that period of history. The text is based on several sources and deals with the computus, the methods of computing church holidays and calendar dates in general. It contains rules and examples of time computation for the period 1710—1720. The author is using the elements of the computus, the golden number, the epacts, the dominical letter, the lunar circle, and the solar circle. At the end the manuscript there is a text on the Moon phases and a brief account entitled Uprava za poznat koliko svaku večer Misec svitli i kreši (A hint to know how much the Moon shines and grows every evening). The last chapters, like in the medical prescriptions, give several instructions on health and discuss topics from everyday life. The manuscript has a special value, since it is the oldest preserved text in the Croatian language that bears testimony to the Franciscan popular education in Dalmatia in the early 18th century. It was almost certainly written for the needs of a Franciscan folk school and it shows that the computus was a part of the curriculum of the Franciscan schools in the early 18th century and even later, as can also be confirmed if we compare the manuscript with a little younger Franciscan textbook Blago otkriveno maloj diçici, i potribnim (Treasure revealed to small children and the needy) (Ancona, 1764). There is a similarity in the interpretation of the computus instructions contained in the Cyrillic manuscript and the mentioned printed book. However, the book covers a wider range of teaching, such as writing, reading, Christian doctrine and the computus, whereas the manuscript is more focused on computus examples and calendar calculations.
