Sažetak
On the basis of his field work, the author analyses around 330 toponymic types in the western part of Popovo. This area has been exposed to great migrations – in the 16th century the villages of Doljani and Velja Vas were depopulated. During the Homeland War (the Croatian war of Independence) the inhabitants emigrated from the village of Vjetrenik as well. Place names reflect the importance of places in which water had been found (in the mountain areas in particular). There are remnants of the Dalmatian substrate (e.g. Mjendeline, Pučine, Stoni, Žukove bare). The most prominent adstratum is Turkish, which is reflected even in toponymic metaphors (e.g. perčin ‘a hill with a peak’). Due to frequent and rampant migrations many toponyms belonging to the basic Croatian are completely opaque to the locals (e.g. Javič, Velja Vas).
