Abstract

Data on the bony structures of the lumbar spine have been presented concisely,
followed by some recent perceptions about the lumba.r spine as a complex biomechanical
whole. Particula·r emphasis has been pla<:ed on the lumbosacral region in
which 75 per cent of all movements occur. The function of the dynamic vertebral
segment has been emphasized and the structure of the small apophyseal joints presented
in addition to pointing out their dominant effect on the function of the lumbar
spine. All ligaments of this region have been presented followed by topography of
the spinal foramen and the relationship of the spina! nerve roots with the other structures
forming this foramen. The importance of being acquainted with the vascularization
and innervation of the intervertebral disc and the .ligamentous apparatus has
been empha-sized as well as the necessity of good knowledge of the small joints and
muscles of the spillle as potential causative agents of pain in this region.
