Sažetak

On a scale of leading causes of death malignant diseases take second place. Progress in medicine led to a longer survival of patients with malignant diseases, thereby making cancer a chronic disease. Pain is one of the most distressing and the most common symptoms reported by patients with malignant diseases. Since pain is a subjective feeling great attention should be paid to adequate assessment of pain because it is the basis of quality treatment for malignant pain. In the treatment pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods can be used. The pharmacological approach is performed according to the model of “three-step ladder”, or according to the modification of it which is known as “lift model”. Non-pharmacological treatment includes psychosocial interventions, physical therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, anesthesiology, surgical and neurosurgical procedures. Researches show that despite the existence of a large number of tools for quality pain evaluation and guidelines for the pain treatment, it is still not satisfactory because 50-70% of people with malignant diseases suffer from some degree of pain. The goal of our daily work is to change that and to implement in daily practice the principles of palliative care, which stresses the right of every patient to treat the pain.
