Abstract

According to the recently published final version of the Jesui t educational system, Ratio
Studiorum, Academia linguae illyricae at the Roman college, then the highest church
university (the present-day Gregoriana) was founded in December 1599. The Academy
was entrusted to Bartol Kašić, the first teacher or lector, who immediately started
teaching Croatian and putting together the first grammar, Institutiones linguae illyricae,
published in 1604. The Academy and Kašić lay the foundation of the standardization
of Croatian and the grammar became a model for later grammarians.
