Abstract
The relationship of the concepts or social phenomena of tradition and traditionalism is the central subject of this text. In the introduction, the author asserts that both concepts refer to certain values. He then follows up this assertion by analyzing the character of values in general. Value processes make up the broader context of the phenomena of tradition and traditionalism. The author argues that regardless of one’s definition value must above all be understood as an historically-conditioned and dynamic entity.
According to the author, tradition can be designated as the historically-active part of history, as a sign of the preservation of social and spiritual continuity. On the other hand, traditionalism designates the condition in a certain culture when there is not movement towards the expansion and realization of new possibilities which tradition in principle allows. Instead, that which has been realized is conserved and conservative measures imposed on new historical reality.
To support this designation, the author examines certain aspects of the relationship of tradition and traditionalism in order to differentiate these two concepts or social processes. As one reliable measure for determining our relationship to tradition or traditionalism, the author cites »his own way which continues in the footsteps of Marxian thought about history as a space in which man realizes his human possibilities«. In the third section, the author considers the character and various aspects of »social life« i and the interrelationship of confessions in the context of tradition and traditionalism.
