Abstract

The cytotoxicity of some nitroaromatic compounds. used as drugs in the treatment of various diseases was studied on mammalian cells cultured in vitro. The cytotoxic effect of these compounds depends on two main parameters: on the time of incubation in the presence of the compound and on its concentration. The effect is exhibited in a relatively wide range of concentrations: from micromolar to millimolar. The cytotoxic action of the nitroaromatic compounds on mammalian cell cultures is manifested as cytostatic and acute or as cytocidal and chronic effect. Niklosamide and nitrofuran derivatives produce more pronounced cytostatic effects, while nitroimidazole derivatives, nitroxoline and nitrazepam exert cytostatic and cytocidal effect in the same concentration range.
