Abstract

For a very long time materials have traditionally been classified in two main groups: metals and non-metals. Now we need a new paradigm in substances and materials (macromolecular compounds) and product classification. One demand for this new paradigm is based on the definition of polymers and their quantity. The second reason is the increased availability of composed and hybrid materials and products. The third one is the possibility of better understanding the nature, interconnection or comparability of substances and materials, which are basically made from the same basic group. The new classification, according to the proposed criterions, divides materials into polymers and non-polymers. Both groups can be inorganic or organic ones. Today the materials are mostly manmade, so the use of the word natural materials e. g. for cotton is unjustified.
