Abstract

In the municipality of Bednja are a large number of landslides, potential landslides or unstable slopes, which are for the long time period studied and partially repaired. The main objective of this paper is by using of GIS technology, with spatial overlapping of different data, to try to anticipate potentially vulnerable areas where landslides may occur. For the development of the GIS model for determining the risk zones of landslides were used the following layers: slope map, geological map, soil drainage map and mean annual precipitation map, as well as natural factors affecting the occurrence of landslides and landuse map and the impact of roads, which are predominantly anthropogenic factors influencing the occurrence of landslides in the area. Two alternatives for the risk map of landslides were presented. In the case of the first variant, in which the roads in the model were taken as a destabilizing factor, zones of high and very high risk of landslides cover a third of the total area of the municipality of Bednja. This variant solution is currently the closest to the actual situation in which the municipality is now. In another variant, in which the roads in the model were taken as a stabilizing factor, the assumption is that all the roads were repaired and thus ensure the stability of slopes. With the repeated analysis of risk areas, it could be observed that the covering of the medium-risk areas in the municipality of Bednja remains practically at the same level, but there is a redistribution of very high and high risk zones in favor of low or very low-risk zones. This is because the roads, with all associated infrastructure and construction of residential and other buildings in the zone of roads, represent the main threat to the stability of slopes. Thus, roads are a good indicator of which areas there is quite a big chance that there will be a landslide.
