Abstract

Various Croatian sources, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks etc., sometimes contain etymological data. Unfortunately, the authors often lack elementary etymological knowledge; in some cases, not even the existing etymological dictionaries are consulted. The article gives an overview of Croatian linguists' attitudes to etymology and etymological concepts. The need to give clear and exact etymological data is emphasized, as an essential component of linguistic culture.
