Nosocomial sepsis caused by Acinetobacter baumannii in a child with pneumococcal pneumonia and newly discovered autoimmune disease

Infections with resistant strains of bacteria present a serious problem nowadays, particularly because of the limited therapeutic options. Patients treated in the intensive care units are highly susceptible. The mortality rate from infections with resistant bacteria in critically ill patients is ranging from 19% to 35% and the leading cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections is Acinetobacter baumannii. We present a case of a 12 year-old-girl admitted to hospital with severe pneumococcal pneumonia. Additional testing established the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus. During treatment that included invasive procedures, the patient acquired Acinetobater baumannii sepsis with fatal outcome. We present this case to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of the underlying disease in order to reduce the chance of poor outcome, which is more common in such patients. The case also shows the importance of nosocomial infections caused by resistant pathogens and accentuates the importance of strict control of hospital infections. Adequate and well-timed selection of antimicrobial drugs as well as safe performance of invasive procedures are considered crucial for this process.
