Abstract

The possibilities of sea contamination by oil and the control of oil spills are described. The methods of fighting oil in sea water are mechanical: burning, adsorption by heavy and light adsorbents, dispersion and micro-biological degradation. The oil spill in Kvarner on 29th December 1971 is dealt with in more details and the difference is shown between the original oil carried by the tanker and the jelly-like suspension of oil in water (30 : 70) spilt from the tanker and gathered at the island of Cres.
