Abstract

In addition to a general review of the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of saturnism the authors put forth the results of clinical and experimental studies carried out at the Institute for Medical Research, incorporating the Institute of Industrial Hygiene, in the field of occupational lead poisoning in the last ten years. Special emphasis is given to clinical experience acquired by the study of hematological methods for the diagnosis of lead poisoning and the analysis of kidney functions in the course of poisoning; to laboratory experience based on the determination of normal lead values in the blood and the evalution and modification of methods for the determination of porphyrine in the urine; and finally to experimental experience relating to the effect of lead on the neuromuscular system.
