Sažetak
The goal of this research was to establish the hierarchy of work values among employees, and to explore possible differences between work values and job satisfaction in view of certain sociodemographic variables (gender, age, education, monthly salary and work experience). An anonymous questionnaire method was used in which 203 subjects participated, from various jobs and with various socio-demographic characteristics potentially relevant to obtaining significant indicators in the interpretations of relations to work, as a supplement to the relatively small number of studies in post-socialist Croatia. Work values were explored in A Questionnaire of Work Values (Super, 1970) which consists of 16 units with which two factors are investigated: intrinsic and extrinsic work values. A set of questions asking the subject to answer questions about their gender, age, education, monthly salary and work experience (socio-demographic characteristics), and to grade their satisfaction with their jobs on a scale of one to seven, were added to the questionnaire. In agreement with previously known trends indicated by prior research of work values in our region, the analysis of the results indicated that a utilitarian orientation was primarily present in the work values hierarchy of employees, where the importance of extrinsic work values (material compensation and social security) is dominant, and they are significantly determined by the gender of the employee. Job satisfaction is significantly correlated to work values, and of the socio-demographic variables that were investigated it is determined by the size of the monthly salary. This study confirmed some earlier assumptions of the author of the study as well as the results of some earlier studies. That is to say that the relation towards work hasn’t significantly changed in spite of the change of the social system (from socialism to capitalism).
