Sažetak

Adequate nutrition is an essential prerequisite in the maintenance of all metabolic functions in the human organism. It is especially important in acute metabolic stress, which increases catabolic response, exhausting endogenic reserves of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The basal energy expenditure increases proportionally to the severity of the wound, i. e. by 10-20% after localized infections, and up to 50% following severe trauma, bums or sepsis. Dependent on the disease etiology and patient status, appropriate nutritional alterations are applied, which alongside medical treatment contribute to faster general improvement of a patient's health status. The resulting nutrition should be balanced in terms of the intake of both energy and nutrients, with adequate or increased intake of vitamins, macro- and microelements needed for restoring normal bodily functions.
