Abstract

The paper opts for the feminist perspective while analyzing two 18th century Dubrovnik adaptations of Molière’s School for Wives and the Critique of the School for Wives. By pointing out symptomatic omissions, alterations and expansions of the two original texts, the paper attempts to validate the extent to which these adaptations make Molière’s texts humorously responsive to much stricter codes of gender conduct, and yet, from the linguistic point of view, to much less “refined” conversational discourse used by the Dubrovnik aristocracy of the time.
