Abstract

The authors have examined the value of ultrasonography in the preoperative diagnostics of congenital bronchial neck cysts in a group of 17 patients. Sonomorphological characteristics of the cysts made the diagnostic results highly reliable and presented ultrasonography as a simple, noninvasive method of determining the topographic relations between the cysts and other important anatomic structures of the neck. The method has no contraindications and enables permanent follow-up of the therapeutic results. The application of this noninvasive method indicates the use of other preoperative diagnostic procedures — such as aspiration biopsy with cytological examination, gammascintigraphy and radiography — only in very specific cases.
