Abstract

A review of 354 patients with acute cholecystitis operated upon is presented. The material shows that the morbidity with an early operation was low. The factors as jaundice, pancreatitis or both, the use of antibiotics and clinical signs were analysed to determine their influence on the results of an early operation.
1. Preoperative antibiotics do not decrease the complication rate and may mask the signs necessary to indicate an early operation.
2. Pancreatitis, jaundice or both not constitute a contraindication to an early operation.
3. An early operation is recommended because it, effectively reduces the morbidity and the lenght of the hospital stay.
4. The cholecystectomy in local anesthesia may sometimes be very usefu.l
