Abstract

ln the early twentieth century; the time of disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, the modernization of the Osmanli Army put at the Army head of westernization movement and established it es the only support for the nation in the time of crisis. This was confirmed by the key role which officer had in the war for independence. The Ataturk's one party system of 1920s and 1930s completely subordinated the Army to itself and exposed it further to "kemalist" ideology. With the multi-party system established in 1946, the politicians independent of the official kemalism, (which remained the Army 's ideology), came to power. The end of the primacy of kemalism and the unstable situation on the Turkish political scene enabled the military leadership to undertake three military interventions (1960, 1971 and 1980) in the political life and each time remove temporarily the civilian politician from the power.
