Sažetak

Aim: To present a case of acute meningoencephalitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes in young immunocompetent girl. Case report: The girl aged 21 years was admitted to a Department of Infectious Diseases with a temperature over 38°C, nausea and vomitting accompanied by a strong headache widening to the hindhead and not diminishing after the administration of analgesics. Cerebrospinal fluid obtained by lumbar punction was sent to Microbiology department. Because a meningoencephalitis was suspected, empirical treatment with ceftriaxone was started. After 72 hours of incubation, L. monocytogenes was isolated and therapy was changed to ampicillin in combination with gentamicin. Anamnesis data indicated her four-day consumption same cake made by fresh thermally unprocessed cottage cheese. Following the introduction of appropriate therapy, there is a significant improvement of the general condition without any remaining health consequences. Conclusion: Better control of food is needed in order to prevent infection by L. monocytogenes.
