Abstract
Among the systems of evaluation and comparison of scientifi c production of the world’s scientifi c institutions, only SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) involves scientifi c institutions besides universities. Scientifi c production of the authors from the Split University Hospital Center (UHC) was investigated by means of SIR indicators. There are several main trends in the scientifi c production of Split UHC. Until 2011, the number of scientifi c papers by authors from Split UHC was slightly increasing to up to approximately 120 per year. This increase was slower in comparison with the global trend of increase
in scientifi c production. In Split UHC, the period after 2013 was characterized by a signifi cant decrease in the production.During the next two years, the number of papers lowered to less than 100 per year due to which Split UHC ceased to be included in the SIR world reports. In the period between 2009 and 2014, the excellence rate indicator suggested a decrease in the quality of the scientific production of Split UHC, i.e. the share of production included in the set of 10% of the most cited papers in their respective scientifi c fi elds fell from 6.8 to 6.1. According to the scientifi c leadership indicator, the normalized value of which reached approximately 70 on average during the last several years, the share of corresponding authors from Split UHC in total output gradually increased. Normalized value of the excellence with leadership indicator increased from 3.8 to 6.3. Although the last two indicators suggest better ranking of Split UHC among both Croatian and world’s scientifi c institutions, these results should be taken with caution due to a less defi ned role of corresponding author in the Croatian clinical scientifi c setting. In conclusion, after a period of increase, the total scientifi c output of Split UHC is characterized by a signifi cant quantitative decrease accompanied by a negative qualitative aspect of the production. One of the reasons for such trends could be a lowering number of senior scientists in Split UHC.
