Sažetak
During the Christmas holidays, demand for ornamental horticultural products is increasing, including the
Christmas cactus as a traditional species. The aim of this paper is to show the taxonomy, the origin of the
species, the way of cultivation and the maintenance and care practice. Genus Schlumbergera belongs to
the family Cactaceae and originates from the rainforests of Brazil. The lighting conditions of 14-16 hours
and temperature of 22-24 °C are favorable for the vegetative growth of the Christmas cactus, and with
8-9 hours of daylight and temperature of 15 °C, the flower development starts. Maintenance practice
includes: providing the plants a rest period after flowering and during the summer, and proper watering
and nourishment during the vegetation period.
