Abstract

In this review, we have selected studies recently reported on suicidal hangings. Forensic specialists, forensic pathologists, and coroners are well acquainted with such deaths. Forensic specialists and forensic pathologists must constantly re-scrutinize their views on the patterns of death , partly because the public has limited knowledge of deaths by hanging, and deaths associated with mechanical shrinhage of the neck, in general. In the review article, though, we did not explore all the deaths associated with the mechanical shrinkage of the neck; only those that resembled hanging. It could be said that deaths by hanging were the topic of this work. The authors reviewed the literature according to the criteria used to determine the method of death in the autopsy records of the Department of the Forensic Medicine and Criminalistics at the Medical Faculty in Rijeka (from 1966 to the beginning of 2017).
