Osteoporosis in patients with Parkinson's disease

Sažetak

Parkinson's disease (PD) and osteoporosis are chronic diseases, which often occur in the elderly. They represent a major medical and economic problem.
The aim of the research was to establish the tendency for osteoporosis in patients with PD. The study included 41 patients, 24 (58.5%) women and 17 (41.5%) men suffering from PD, without significant comorbidity. The average age of the examined patients was 69 years and average duration of illness 6.5 years.
The stage of PD and level of activity in daily life is estimated by the Hoehn & Yahr scale. The evaluation of bone density was made by densitometry (DXA) by applying the criteria of the World Health Organization and compared with the stage of PD. The first stage of PB was found in 12 (29.3%) patients, the second one in 8 (19.5%), the third one in 11 (26.8%), the fourth in 10 (24.4%) and in the fifth stage of the disease we had no examinees. Osteoporosis was found in 9 (21.9%) patients; osteopenia in 25 (61%) patients and normal findings of DXA was in 7 (17.1%) examinees.
Based on our research, we can conclude that patients suffering from PD may have a greater tendency to osteoporosis and therefore a greater risk for bone fractures.
