Abstract

The paper deals with the census of the land area of Zadar from 1610 kept in the library of the Biblioteca del Museo Correr in Venice. The census was correlated with the 1608 statistics published by Roman Jelić. The taker of both censuses is the same person. Comparing the censuses published so far in Croatian historiography and doing their analysis and synthesis, we made a hypothesis that the Venetian Rectors in the Dalmatian communes were mainly responsible for carrying them out. The article also concludes that, at least for the Zadar area, censuses were regularly conducted every other year. Their purpose was to give an insight into the number of males fit for military service on whom the Venetian authorities could count at wartime. Given that a census included the names of the household holders and the number of members of each family, the 1610 census of the Zadar area is an important historical source for studying the onomastics, demographic trends and population migration in the area during the 16th and 17th century.
