Abstract

Acute phase proteins were first identified in the early twentieth century, arising as a response to infection. Today they are considered to be an integral part of the early inflammatory response that occurs in response to infection, trauma, stress or neoplastic changes. So far, about 40 acute phase proteins have been identified which, in relation to the changes in their concentration in response to stimuli, are divided into positive and negative acute phase proteins. On the basis of the changes in their values it is possible to confirm the diagnosis of certain diseases, to monitor the development of the disease and the response of the organism to the therapy administered.
