Sažetak
The paper deals with exercise-induced potential complications: cardiovascular complications in healthy persons, in persons with diagnosed or previously unknown heart disease, and, finally, cardiovascular incidents during physical rehabilitation. The problem of vasodepressor syncope is also dealt with. Sudden death in healthy persons engaged in physical exercise is extremely rare, since a healthy heart is protected from any complications. Of possible cardiovascular complications in persons suffering from heart disease arrhythmia, poor or impaired heart blood supply and structural heart anomalies are also dealt with. The mentioned states are associated with any cardiovascular complications during exercise, the frequency of complications and their relation towards physical exercise with special reference to their prevention are dealt with. According to these samples the causes of sudden death in young athletes are discussed in relation to middle-aged joggers and marathon runners, with references to our analysis of seven persons who died during or immediately after exercise.
Further, the criteria for the decision who is to undergo medical examination and a pre-exercise load test are specified as: persons over 35 or younger if any one of the following signs is present: symptoms of heart disease, heart murmur, increased arterial pressure, symptoms of joint inflammation, diabetes mellitus, family history of coronary disease, short of breath during exercise, chest pain, general weakness on exertion, dizziness on exertion. Every top athlete and every person over 35 years who is about to engage in exercise should undergo an ultrasound heart examination. If the thickness of the wall of the left ventricle is 15 mm or more, we can not recommend sports or recreative exercise.
