Canine cutaneous histiocytoma: cytological characteristics - retrospective study of cases diagnosed at the Department of Veterinary Pathology 2009 – 2018

Abstract

Canine cutaneous histiocytoma is a round cell tumor that most commonly occurs in young dogs. Cytological examination alone is often sufficient to make a definitive diagnosis. The aim of this study was to emphasize the importance of sampling for cytological examination, a better understanding of the cytological characteristics of canine cutaneous histiocytoma, and the association of inflammatory cells with tumor regression. A cytological examination is a very valuable method in the diagnosis of canine cutaneous histiocytoma because of its accuracy, speed, simplicity and reasonable price. This research was performed on 20 cytological preparations from the archive of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. The samples were microscopically reevaluated. At the same time the following cytological characteristics were determinated: cellularity, nucleus to cytoplasm ratio, presence of anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, infiltration of lymphocytes and neutrophils, and presence of necrotic debris.
