Sažetak

The role of anticoagulation in the indication of acute stroke has undergone great change in the past few years. Although being used for more than 50 years in this indication, even in routine use in the acute phase of stroke, final consensus or clear and consistent studies which would indicate anticoagulation in certain types of strokes are still missing. This paper presents a history of anticoagulation use, as well as recent guidelines for the use of anticoagulation in therapy and prevention of ischemic stroke. Finally, we can conclude that the use of anticoagulation therapy in the early stages of treating stroke, as well as in preventing recurrent stroke can be recommended with a strong level of evidence only in the case of confirmed cardioembolic stroke.
