Sažetak

Cerebrovascular disease causes various pathological conditions of the brain, as well as various accompanying mental disturbances. Mental disorders are a common complication after a stroke and have a particularly negative effect on functional recovery, treatment outcomes, patients’ quality of life and caregiver’s burnout. Recent findings suggest that the early onset of mental disorders after stroke causes higher mortality and increases the risk of stroke recurrence. In general, we can say that the current procedures in recognizing mental disorders associated with stroke are not satisfactory or sufficient. The neuropsychiatric consequences after a stroke can be divided into primarily neurological and primarily psychiatric disorders and conditions. In primarily psychiatric disorders and conditions, with the exception of depression, all other psychiatric disorders that may occur often remain unrecognized, and thus completely neglected and untreated. Future research should focus on developing protocols for diagnosing, treating, and preventing the psychological complications of stroke.
