Crkveno glagoljaško pjevanje u Omišlju (na otoku Krku)
Mato Lešćan
Sažetak
During the isolated analysis of these melodies and later trough a general
analysis we got to the results that could clarify the problem of the Old
Church Slavic singing a little. Contrary to popular belief so far that it was
just a simple syllabic succession, we have to ascertain that it contains rich
melismatic tunes as well. As for the tonal basis of these tunes, they can be
classified into three categories:
1. the melodies in a pure sopile scale (Istrian scale)
2. the sopile melodies with endings in D major (major endings)
3. the melodies in the manner of Old Church singing.
A special phenomenon is the tune "SANCTUS" in the mass for the dead as
an example of bitonality, or perhaps the exchange of tonalities.
Free rhythm is one of the richest elements of this type of folk singing. Is
truly emphasizes music declamation of the text, forming an inseparable unit
with it.
As a special feature of this region, we can point out many tunes in two
versions, both festive and ordinary, which greatly reminds of the similar
phenomenon in the melodic elements of the Gregorian chorale. It is worth
mentioning that there are special tunes for epistle and gospel, which are very
rich with melisma.
An important component of some melodies is a special chromaticism: the
fourth-tone scale, which remarkably enriches music tissue with ornaments.
There are many melodies of chorale origin which resemble one another. In
such cases it would be necessary to find original tunes which may bee saved
in a local collection of used melodies.
One of the oldest remainders of medieval singing is certainly the melody
"Glory, Gratitude and Honour" with its surprising accompaniment in the
fourth, which clearly shows that it is as old as the medieval two-part singing
in the parallel fourths, so called organum.
The instruments ( two sopiles) are used in church only once a year ( on
Corpus Christi). They have a role of a prelude, interlude and postlude. They
are specially tuned for that occasion so that the reeds are exchanged: from
a thin sopile to a thick one and vice versa.
