Sažetak
The concept of Mediterranean-ness in the Croatian music culture - and culture
in general - is largely linked geographically with regions of Dalmatia,
Kvarner Bay and Istria (the narrow coastal strip and island region). If one
were obliged to select a single music-making phenomenon as being most
representative of the Mediterranean as far as the Croatians are concerned, it
would definitely be phenomenon of klapa singing - which represent a coming
together of traditional and popular music even with a tendency of spreading
outside the imagined borders of the Mediterranean.
Author discusses development of the present klapa ensemble - a popular music
phenomenon, which emerged from traditional klapa singing, as a result
of social, political and cultural changes in Croatia in last decades. At the same
time, traditional klapa songs are explored, experimented and popularized
by musicians of various popular musical genres (ethno, world music, rock,
techno, rap). This dimension is closely related to the musical genre in Croatian
called "ča-val" (eha wave), a popular musical genre of Istria, one of the Croatian
Mediterranean regions. The text sung in the regional Istrian Chakavian
dialect is the primary evidence of the Mediterraneanness in this popular music
genre. It has found devotees among proponents of rock, pop, jazz and
more recently, ethno and world music musical genres.
