Motives for reducing night shift work and the degree of automation of production processes

Sažetak
The automation of production processes should contribute to better health and safety at work as well as reduce the exposure of workers to unfavourable working conditions, among them being shift or night shift work. The purpose of our research was to determine whether the level of automation of production processes influences the number of night shift work hours in production workers in medium and large-sized Slovenian companies. Quantitative research was conducted on a population base of 516 companies; a questionnaire was used to obtain primary data. We found that there is no statistically significant relationship between the level of production process automation and the number of production worker hours worked during a night shift (r = −0.057).
The key motives for introducing automated production processes are improvements in product and process quality (n = −45) as well as worker safety improvement (n = 43). We have garnered recommendations for owners and managers of medium and large-sized companies, that will have practical implications for the sustainable development of the economy as well as society.
