Sažetak
In church art, the icon expresses the spirituality of the Christian East, but also points to a spiritual and theological reading of the image. Despite its theological dimension, the icon is closely associated with the place of prayer. This means that the privileged space of the icon is the Church. Byzantine spirituality is liturgical and is closely connected with the meaning of the icon. In this sense, icons are an integral part of the eastern tradition. Since the icon cannot be valued only from an artistic point of view, the intention of this paper is to reveal primarily the spiritual and liturgical-theological dimension of the icon. Looking at everything that the Orthodox Church understands as a tradition, we cannot imagine either the theology or the liturgy of the Orthodox Church without icons and their liturgical-theological significance. Apart from having a theological character, icons are also theological artworks created as a result of prayer and contemplation. On the other hand, the icon is the object before which we pray and which introduces us to the mystery of faith. In this sense, the icon is capable of expressing mystery and divine Truth. Just as the word of God reveals the divine Truth, so the icon reveals the Truth, but in a different way from the Word.
