Abstract
The paper presents the Initiative for establishing a maritime school in Stari Grad in 1875. Based on the original document that is saved in the State Archive of Trieste, the possibility of establishing a maritime school is discussed. The idea which was directed to the authorities was formed in the time of prominently significant maritime activity of the entire island of Hvar, especially town of Stari Grad. The study brings interesting data that support the idea of establishment, and they talk about Stari Grad as the center of Dalmatian maritime trade. That argument is substantiated by specific demographic, educational, economic and maritime information. Although the school has never been established, this source gives us a complete picture of maritime Stari Grad from 1875.
