Sažetak

Baron Karlo Hilleprand von Prandau left an enormous contribution to the musical culture of Slavonia as a musical performer, benefactor and composer. He received his musical education in Osijek and Bratislava, where he began to compose. Upon returning to Croatia, the baron took upon himself the care for the local musical culture – building a music school in Donji Miholjac, financing the procurement of instruments, becoming a benefactor to many young musicians, regularly organizing concerts where he himself performed on occasion and actively continuing his activities as a composer.
The cultural contribution of the Prandau family is relatively well documented and explored. The familial Musical Collection in the Department of Museum Publications in Osijek, catalogued in 1980 by the musicologists Ladislav Šaban and Zdravko Blažeković, is a rich source of data on the musical activities of this family, and it also contains several original works by the baron Karlo, which have not yet been closely examined. This paper brings forth the first insight into the baron’s compositional activities based on analysis and contextualization of ten of his original compositions. Along with a musical analysis, the historical context of each composition is described, as well as a critical insight into the baron’s compositional activities.
