Sažetak

Introduction: The purpose of this paper was to review the basic characteristics of bacteria from the genus Brucella and present original data on patients hospitalized at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases „Dr. Fran Mihaljević” in the period from 2007 to 2020. The obtained results were compared with available data from Bosnia and Herzegovina and data from the electronic database of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control for the period from 2007 to 2019.
Methods: Anamnestic data were collected from the medical histories of patients at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases „Dr. Fran Mihaljević”. The compared data were collected from the annual reports for Croatia and the reports of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control for European countries.
Results: In the period from 2007 to 2020, 25 patients were treated for brucellosis in the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases „Dr. Fran Mihaljević”. The data on brucellosis patients of the Croatian Institute of Public Health and the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases „Dr. Fran Mihaljević” do not match for 2008, 2014, and 2020. Bosnia and Herzegovina had a significantly higher incidence of brucellosis compared to countries in the region. Mediterranean countries have significantly more cases of newly infected people, compared to Croatia.
Conclusion: Brucellosis in Croatia is characterized by sporadic cases, mostly imported from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Further implementation and development of preventive measures with the aim of maintaining a favorable epidemiological situation are necessary.
