The 17th International Conference on Geoinformation and Cartography (17thICGC) was organised by the Croatian Cartographic Society and the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb and was held from 23 to 25 September 2021. The conference was held under the auspices of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the University of Zagreb. The conference was supported by the State Geodetic Administration of the Republic of Croatia, the Geographics journal, HERE Technologies Zagreb as the main sponsor, and Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d. as a golden sponsor.
By organising this conference, the Croatian Cartographic Society and the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb wished to contribute to the development of geoinformatics, cartography, geodesy, geography and associated fields with a special emphasis on new achievements. A wide range of topics and renowned guest lecturers guaranteed interesting lectures and a contemporary approach.
The conference programme and lecture abstracts have been published in print and online (www.kartografija.hr).
The official language of the conference was English. The keynote speakers were Tao Wang and Stephan Winter.
Dr. Tao Wang is an associate professor and the associate dean of education at the College of Geospatial Information Science and Technology at the Capital Normal University of China. His research areas include geospatial data analysis and visualization with applications in smart cities and flood simulation. He is the chair of the ICA Commission on Education and Training.
Stephan Winter is Professor in Spatial Information Science at the University of Melbourne, specializing in human spatial cognition, navigation, and intelligent transportation. He is pioneering formal and stochastic models of urban environments, and does research in intelligent spatial systems, computational transportation science, and probabilistic time geography. He holds a PhD from the University of Bonn, and a habilitation from the Technical University Vienna.
Of particular note is the very large number of people registered for the conference. A record 389 people registered for the 17thICGC. On the first day of the online conference, 317 participants registered, and 38 were present in person. On the second day, 306 of them applied online, and 38 were present in person.
The conference programme began on 23 September 2021, at the premises of the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb. The invited lecture followed. Assoc Prof. Tao Wang spoke about the progress of cartographic education and reflected on it. He made a bibliometric analysis of international cartographic conferences over the last 20 years. The programme continued with six presentations, sponsor promotion, lunch, followed by three more lectures on map projections.
The programme continued the next day and started with a keynote by Prof. Stephan Winter on place in mobility research. The programme continued with 7 presentations, followed by a video presentation marking the Day of the Faculty of Geodesy. After lunch, the conference continued with a series of presentations.
On 25 September 2021, the Croatian Cartographic Society organised an excursion to Medvednica, getting to know its basic geographical and geological characteristics and a presentation of GPS application in mountaineering and cartography. Departure from the church in Šestine was at 10 AM. Next to the St. Rocco Chapel and the Šestinski lagvić restaurant, we followed the marked trail no. 12 to Medvedgrad. Unfortunately, Medvedgrad was closed, so we were not able to climb to the top of the tower where the GPS point is located. The marked path leads further to the Grafičar lodge where a mountaineering lunch awaited us. The Zrinski mine is located in the immediate vicinity, and those interested visited it with an expert guide. We returned passing by St. Jacob’s Chapel (trigonometer), Kraljčin Zdenac (the Queen's Well), and then along the Miroslavec educational trail to Šestinski Lagvić and Šestine. The descent took about two hours.
According to the Ordinance on Professional Training of Persons Performing Professional Geodetic Work, and Instructions for the manner of conducting professional training programmes of the Croatian Chamber of Certified Geodetic Engineers, a knowledge test was taken after completing the training. The knowledge exam, which was held online after the conference, was attended and answered on time by 295 people. A list was sent to the Chamber with 272 members of the Chamber who responded on time and had more than 70% correct answers.
