Dear readers, in front of you is a special edition of the Cartography and Geoinformation journal dedicated to Professor Emeritus Miljenko Lapaine, Croatian cartographer, respected member of the world cartographic community and winner of the International Cartographic Society ICA Honorary Fellowship award.

The idea of publishing a special publication in honour of the 70th birthday of Prof. Emer. Miljenko Lapaine was given by the second signed editor and supported by the Croatian Cartographic Society.

Due to the fruitful cooperation of Prof. Lapaine with many scientists from other Croatian faculties and universities, because of the reputation it enjoys in the world, we sent an invitation for cooperation to renowned scientists in the field of cartography and geoinformation.

Most responded and their contributions are before you. The presentation of the life and work of Prof. Lapaine is followed by ten papers written by seven authors from Croatia and seven authors from abroad, from Austria, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Hungary and Slovenia.

The papers from various fields of cartography have been published in Croatian and English. Two papers deal with cartographic heritage, one of which is dedicated to the cartometric comparison of the coast on the manuscript map of Illyria from 1663 with the depiction of the coast on geographical and maritime maps from the end of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century, and the other, based on selected cartographic representations of the island of Korčula deals with the consideration of geographical knowledge about that island. One of the papers is about cartographic visualization of 3D maps with an emphasis on clarifying the difference between the terms 3D model and 3D map. The field of thematic cartography is covered in the paper on ethnic maps, which investigates the suitability of the main ethnocartographic methods for depicting ethnic structures. The importance of mathematical elements on maps for orienteering and other forms of sports orientation is presented in a paper that investigates the mathematical content of orienteering maps on the example of selected maps of Croatia and Slovenia. One of the papers is devoted to the establishment of a geo-information system of the Croatian state border for the needs of more efficient management of affairs and records with a proposal for future upgrades of that system. From the category of education, we present a paper on the analysis of the work of cartography teachers at international cartographic conferences and a review of education on cartography and geospatial information. Map projections are the topic of the work in which a continuous projection is proposed to represent the World Ocean.

Since each map is the result of many decisions, trust in maps is of unquestionable importance, and this is also the topic of the paper, which proposes how cartographers can ensure and increase trust in maps. The work entitled From Map Projection to Semiotics deals with the great thinker Charles Spencer Peirce and his projection, who - according to his own words - learned to think with diagrams, not words.

Finally, we thank all the authors for their contributions, the reviewers, everyone who collaborated and contributed to the quality of this issue.

Poštovani čitatelji, pred vam je posebno izdanje časopisa Kartografija i Geoinformacije posvećeno professoru emeritusu Miljenku Lapaineu, hrvatskom kartografu, uvaženom članu svjetske kartografske zajednice i dobitniku priznanja Međunarodnog kartografskog društva ICA Honorary Fellowship.

Ideju o objavljivanju posebne publikacije u čast 70. rođendana prof. emer. Miljenka Lapainea dao je drugi potpisani urednik, a podržalo Hrvatsko kartografsko društvo.

Zbog plodne suradnje prof. Lapainea s mnogim znanstvenicima s drugih hrvatskih fakulteta i sveučilišta, zbog ugleda koji uživa u svijetu, poziv na suradnju uputili smo renomiranim znanstvenicima iz područja kartografije i geoinformacija.

Većina se odazvala i njihovi doprinosi su pred vama. Nakon prikaza života i rada prof. Lapainea slijedi deset radova što ih je napisalo sedam autora iz Hrvatske i sedam autora iz inozemstva, iz Austrije, Bugarske, Grčke, Kine, Mađarske i Slovenije.

Donosimo radove iz različitih područja kartografije koji su objavljeni na hrvatskom i engleskom jeziku. Dva rada bave se kartografskom baštinom od kojih je jedan posvećen kartometrijskoj usporedbi obale na rukopisnoj karti Ilirika iz 1663. s prikazom obale na geografskim i pomorskim kartama s kraja 16. i prve polovine 17. st., a drugi se na temelju odabranih kartografskih prikaza otoka Korčule bavi razmatranjem geografske spoznaje o tom otoku. Jedan od objavljenih radova bavi se kartografskom vizualizacijom 3D karata s naglaskom na razjašnjavanje razlike između pojmova 3D model i 3D karta. Područje tematske kartografije obrađeno je u radu o etničkim kartama koji istražuje prikladnost glavnih etnokartografskih metoda za prikaz etničkih struktura. Važnost matematičkih elemenata na kartama za orijentacijsko trčanje i druge oblike sportske orijentacije donosi rad koji istražuje matematički sadržaj u orijentacijskim kartama na primjeru odabranih karata Hrvatske i Slovenije. Jedan od radova posvećen je uspostavi geoinformacijskog sustava državne granice za potrebe učinkovitijeg vođenja poslova i evidencija s prijedlogom budućih nadogradnji toga sustava. Iz kategorije obrazovanja donosimo rad o analizi rada nastavnika kartografije na međunarodnim kartografskim konferencijama i osvrtu na obrazovanje o kartografiji i geoprostornim informacijama. Kartografske projekcije tema su rada u kojem je predložena neprekinuta kartografska projekcija za prikaz Svjetskog oceana. Budući da je svaka karta rezultat mnogih odluka, povjerenje u karte je od neupitne važnosti te je to ujedno i tema rada koji daje prijedlog kako kartografi mogu osigurati i povećati pouzdanost u karte. Rad pod naslovom Od kartografske projekcije do semiotike bavi se velikim misliocem Charlesom Spencerom Peirceom i njegovom projekcijom, koji je - prema vlastitom kazivanju - naučio razmišljati dijagramima, a ne riječima.

Na kraju zahvaljujemo svim autorima na njihovim prilozima, recenzentima, svima koji su surađivali i pridonijeli kvaliteti ovoga broja.

U ime svih autora i suradnika čestitamo prof. emeritusu Miljenku Lapaineu njegov 70. rođendan, želimo mu dobro zdravlje kako bi i nadalje pružao važne doprinose svjetskoj kartografiji.
