The Relationship between Demographic Characteristics and Characteristics of Types and Patterns of the Varaždin Region Landscape – Application of Correlation Analysis

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the connection between selected demographic characteristics and characteristics of landscape types and patterns in the Varaždin region. The approach of defining landscape types and patterns was used, which implies the use of land cover/land use data, i.e. the Corine Land Cover database for the year 2018 (CLC 2018), while from the demographic data, census data from all population censuses in the period 1981 – 2021 were analyzed. The correlation analysis of this work was carried out using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, which is included in the computer program IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. The cartographic representations used enabled better spatial analysis, and were made using the basic software package ArcGIS Desktop version 10.0 from ESRI. The results showed that in the last three intercensal periods, a decrease in the total number of inhabitants of the Varaždin region as a whole was recorded, and in the last intercensal period, a decrease in the number of inhabitants was determined in all local self-government units. At the settlement level, for the period 1981 - 2021, there were more settlements with a decrease in the number of inhabitants (46) than with an increase in the number of inhabitants (39), whereby more centers of local self-government units had a decrease in the number of inhabitants (6), while a smaller number of centers had an increase in the number of inhabitants (5). Variables of demographic characteristics were put into a correlation relationship: index of change in the number of inhabitants in the period 1981 - 2021; number of inhabitants in 2021; population density in 2021, and regarding the variables of characteristics of landscape types and patterns, the following were entered separately for each landscape type in 2018: shares of the area of landscape types within the LGU; average area of samples of landscape types (in km²). Correlation analysis established the connection of almost all observed pairs of variables.
