Sažetak

The aim of the study was to examine nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards influence of hospitalization
on children and preparation for medical procedures. The sample included 30 nurses from two pediatric
units, aged 21 to 51 years, 20 with secondary school education and 10 with higher education, with
different length of work experience. For the purpose of this study, anonymous questionnaire was
developed. The questionnaire consisted of 30 items and participants had to answer if they think they were
true of false. Results showed that pediatric nurses have relative good knowledge about the effects of
hospitalization on children. However, on some issues all nurses gave correct answers (for example, the
importance of mother staying with child in hospital, role of play and drawing in expression of feelings), but
some proportion of sample gave wrong answers and negative attitudes on other issues (for example, not
recognizing individual needs of children, lack of knowledge about agedependent psychological preparation
for medical procedures). It was found that nurses with higher level of education have better knowledge
comparing to nurses with lower level of education and no correlation between length of work experience
and results on questionnaire was found.
