Abstract

At the beginning of the article, possible relationships between the history of literature and the process of canonization are determined, and after that it is asserted that Dubravko Jelčić in The History of Croatian Literature (2nd ed. 2004) did not explicitly announce the revision of the Croatian literary canon, but that the revision was indirectly implemented in his review of Croatian literacy and literature from the Baška tablet to the 21st century. The criteria according to which this implicit process of canonization was carried out are discussed as well. The article further contains the analysis and assessment of Jelčić’s approach to dramatic texts and their authors through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Romanticism, Realism, First Modernism, Expressionism, Second Modernism and Postmodernism. It is concluded that Jelčić’s proposal of the Croatian dramatic canon is too restrictive.
