Sažetak

Academician Dubravko Jelčić was one of the most important writers in the history of Croatian literature. Continuing the work of his predecessors, he based his results on the latest knowledge of literary research. The first edition was published in 1997, while the second, significantly expanded one, was published in 2004. Citizens of Požega play an important role in Croatian literary history, one of them being a Jesuit Antun Kanižlić with his literary opus centered around a baroque poem Saint Rosalia. One of the prominent linguists of the 18th century was Fra Grga Ćevapović, who published the Katančić›s translation of the Bible into Croatian. Then in the 19th century, Vjekoslav Babukić was another prominent personality, actively participa ting in the process of standardisation of the Croatian language, emphasising the significance of its soft, noble shtokavian quality, which made him one of the most important associates of Gaj. In the pre-realist period there are other significant Požega citizens: Miroslav Kraljević, the author of the first Croatian novel The Student from Požega, Kajo Agjić, a Franciscan writing amusing and educational feuilletons, Vilim Korajac distinguished for his humourous writings, Aleksandar Tomić, a storyteller, translator and the brother of Josip Eugen Tomić whose history novels are exceptionally important, as well as and the fact that he was assigned the task to complete August Šenoa’s novel The Curse. In the literature of the twentieth century, a special place belongs to a travel writer Matko Peić, and an important one certainly to a fiction writer for young adults, Branko Hribar. Interestingly, landscape poetry writers are mentioned as well, and among them: Željko Muljević, Blaženka Maras Čulina, Mato Nosić, Lana Derkač, Nada Prkačin and Branko Živković. In conclusion, Hi story of Croatian Literature by Dubravko Jelčić offers an informative insight into lives and work of a whole pleiade of writers and linguists that were born in, or lived in Požega and Požega area, which is reflected in their work.
