Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) is a common dermatological disease, immunologically mediated and characterized by hair loss. The exact pathology of the disease is still not fully understood, but the accepted theory is that immune system attacks the hair follicles. The course of the disease can be relapsing, remitting or persistent. The disease is most often manifested by sharply limited round areas with hair loss without any other pysichal symptoms. The most commonly affected area is the scalp, but it can lead to complete loss of hair on the scalp, which is called alopecia totalis, or loss of hair on the body, alopecia universalis. A 12-year-old boy with a long history of alopecia universalis and atopic dermatitis was successfully treated with upadacitinib, a JAK 1 inhibitor, with complete hair growth and improvement in the clinical picture of atopic dermatitis. The greatest effect of the treatment was achieved on the psychological status of the patient and his family. Treatment of patients with alopecia areata is challenging, as is the treatment of all immune-mediated diseases, but modern therapy in dermatology brings
ner treatment oportunities with greatest effect on quality of life.
