Abstract

Transverse Mercator projection (HTRS96/TM) became the official state projection in the Republic of Croatia in 2004. This review provides basic information about the selection and introduction of this projection. At the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb, work on the project "Geodetic and Cartographic Datums of the Republic of Croatia" began in early 2000. One of the three sub-projects was "Proposal of Official Map Projections of the Republic of Croatia". The decision on the establishment of official geodetic datums and map projections of the Republic of Croatia was published in the Official Gazette in 2004. According to that Decision, the coordinate system of the transverse Mercator projection − abbreviated HTRS96/TM, with the central meridian 16°30' E and the local linear scale factor on the central meridian 0.9999 became the projection coordinate system of the Republic of Croatia for the area of cadastre and detailed state topographic cartography. The article describes the activities undertaken for the introduction of the new projection, gives the basic properties of that projection system and states the basic differences compared to the previous Gauss-Krüger system, unofficially known as HDKS.
