Sažetak
Analysis of the Frequency of Suicides in Croatia Before and During the Pandemic of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic began at the end of 2019 and spread very quickly worldwide. Since the
beginning of the pandemic, experts have been concerned regarding the increase in suicide rates. Different
studies around the world give different results; therefore the aim of this research was to examine the
number of attempted and completed suicides in Croatia - before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The results showed that there was no statistically signifcant change between the two periods in the total
number of suicides and suicide attempts, but specifc signifcant changes were found. A signifcant drop
in the number of completed suicides among men aged 36 to 50 was observed, and an increase in the
total number of suicides and attempts by 58.49% among girls aged 15 to 18. In the pandemic period,
methods of suicides that can be committed at home were more often chosen than those that require
leaving the home. A signifcant decrease in committed suicides was recorded in April 2020 compared
to the average number of suicides in the same month in 2018 and 2019. Another signifcant drop in
the number of committed suicides compared to the pre-pandemic period occurred in September 2021.
The long-term effects of this pandemic on suicides and mental health are still not possible to assess;
therefore, there is a need for further research on this topic.
