Sažetak

Sensory integration theory is based on a rich history of research and clinical work in the field of neuroscience and understanding of the integration of sensory, motor, perceptual and cognitive functions and behavior. This theory-based and practical therapeutic approach offers occupational therapy practitioners clear strategies for a standardized sensory integration assessment process and specific and original intervention strategies for the remediation of underlying sensory challenges that affect behavior and functional performance. This review aims to describe the scientifically based theoretical framework and approach of Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI), patterns of sensory integration dysfunction in relation to typical development, and basic principles of assessment and intervention. This manuscript also aims to clearly distinguish Ayres Sensory Integration, which was developed by occupational therapist Dr. Anna Jean Ayres based on her scientific research and clinical work, from other approaches that use similar concepts and strategies but do not include the same theoretical principles or have the same credibility criteria. Applying the theoretical principles, research and intervention of the Ayres sensory integration therapeutic approach is followed by the ASI® Fidelity Measure (ASIFM), which is necessary to implement therapy according to the given principles, guidelines, and evidence-based practice. Although the Fidelity Measure is designed as a research instrument, it is also a useful framework for clinicians’ performance in practice. With this review, the focus will be on the most important determinants of the ASI approach to contribute to the understanding of the presented concepts, but also, to contribute to the consensus in their translation into the Croatian language.
