Communicative competence and language skills in Croatian textbooks and reading books

Sažetak
Communicative competence is one of the key concepts of modern education. It is developed in all teaching subjects, however, it is most represented and especially emphasized in Croatian language classes through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the representation of tasks related to the development of the basic language skills in modern text- and reading books in the Croatian language classroom teaching, compared to older text- and reading books. We tried to find out to what extent carefully designed tasks in modern textbooks are actually aimed at the development of the pragmatic language skills compared to textbooks from earlier decades. The obtained results largely confirm the hypothesis that modern textbooks will be characterized by a larger and more diverse number of methodical tasks, focusing on improving basic language skills. The exception is the development of listening skills, which is evidenced by the lower representation of appropriate tasks.
