Continental bulldog – better welfare through outcrossing

Sažetak

As the health of Bulldogs is seriously threatened by brachiocephalic obstructive airway syndrome and other diseases and their symptoms such as shortness of breath, snoring, coughing, cyanosis etc. seriously affect the welfare of dogs of these breeds, the need to improve the breed through crossbreeding became clear. Thus, in the early 2000s, a new breed named the Continental Bulldog was created in Switzerland by outcrossing Bulldogs and Olde English Bulldogges imported from the United States. These are medium-sized, athletically built dogs of the molossoid type, whose breathing is silent. Selection is based on the degree
of possible hip and elbow dysplasia, the presence of the canine multifocal retinopathy gene, cystinuria gene, the DVL2 gene mutation and the respiratory function grade according to the Cambridge University protocol.
